Even though it’s a big weekend for MMA with UFC fight night 107 in London’s O2 arena. However, in New York there will be lots of fists thrown.
On Friday night at the Theater in Madison Square Garden is a night of full fights with the main even been Tim Ibarra vs Irishman Michael Conlan who makes his professional debut after an impressive amateur career. Conlan, who won bronze at the 2012 Olympics, and gold at the 2014 Commonwealth games, 2015 European championships and World championships. It is a little bit controversial making him the main event, however he is a name, and being Irish giving the date. Of the 7 fights on the card, it is mostly newcomers with the exception of Alex Saucedo vs Johnny Garcia. Also it’s worth noting Bob Arum, promotor of the event has stated he wants this event to be an annual occurrence.
And then on Saturday night, Madison Square Garden arena, another event of 7 fights with 2 fights been relatively newcomers, but a stacked main card. 3 title fights will take place, first the WBC Continental Americas lightweight title between undefeated champion Ryan Martin vs Bryant Cruz, then WBC World Super Flyweight title between undefeated champion Roman Gonzalez vs challenger Wisaksil Wangek. And then, it’s the big one, the main even will see champion vs champion; Gennady Golovkin vs Daniel Jacobs.
4 belts will be up for grabs in the main event: Jacob’s WBA Super Middleweight title and Golovkin’s WBC, IBF and IBO World Middleweight titles. Daniel Jacobs has a record of 32 – 1 – 0 with 29 KO’s and came back from a 19 month spell with bone cancer. Gennady Golovkin is pound for pound one of the best of all time, with an amateur record of 345 – 5 – 0 and a professional record of 36 – 0 – 0 with 33 KO’s with his last victory been over Kell Brook in September of last year. Of course, the fight the boxing world want to see is Golovkin vs Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez; but he has to get past Jacobs first.
