The Republic of Ireland's national football team got their
UEFA European Championship campaign underway today against
Sweden, and the players got an unexpected boost before kick-off in the shape of a rallying cry from
MMA superstar
Conor McGregor.
The Irish football team are well known for the enthusiastic and good-natured support they take with them to international tournaments. Although they lack any real superstar name, their travelling fans can usually be relied upon as a '12th man' to help them compete with- and often overcome- more illustrious opposition.
The source of the side's support before their opening match with Sweden in Paris today was a little unusual however, as MMA superstar, Conor McGregor, the current UFC World Featherweight Champion, issued an inspirational rallying cry courtesy of Irish broadcaster,
RTE Sports.
It certainly seemed to do the job as Ireland started the game very well and looked god throughout. They can think themselves very unlucky to have only finished the game with a 1-1 draw.
