No one really knows what
Conor McGregor's next move will be. Fights with
Nate Diaz and
Floyd Mayweather seem possible yet far away, but if he doesn't make a decision soon, his Featherweight World title may be at risk.
Few could have predicted the circus that would ensue when Conor McGregor opted to fight Nate Diaz at welterweight after a lightweight title shot against Rafael Dos Anjos was cancelled. It set in course a chain of events whereby McGregor's twitter feed generated more media interest than any of the promotion's other fighters or fights combined during his absence.
The furore surrounding the Dubliner's possible fantasy fight with retired boxing great Floyd 'Money' Mayweather has largely distracted from the fact that McGregor is the reigning UFC World Featherweight Champion, and he has not defended the belt since he won it from Jose Aldo in December last year.
Speaking on
Fox Sport this week, UFC President Dana White said that Conor would have to make up his mind soon, as he was prepared to strip him of the belt and put it up for grabs at UFC 200:
"That's the thing: Conor needs to clear up this whole retirement thing and clear it up fast because if he's retired, then at UFC 200 Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar are fighting for the vacant title then."
McGregor's trainer, John Kavanagh, has publically hinted that his protégé may never want to make the cut to 145 again, but he clearly would have liked to hold the belt at lightweight and featherweight before relinquishing either. However, if he doesn't make up his mind soon he could well see his title contested by former lightweight champion, Edgar, and the man he defeated, Aldo, at UFC 200.
